India’s energy transition - and how Danish experiences can contribute to its green transition
Since 2018, Denmark and India have cooperated on energy. India is the world’s third largest consumer of energy and its electricity consumption is expected to double by 2030. With a high proportion of fossil fuel based energy generation, India is also the third largest CO2 emitter in the world.
However, India is a country of great ambitions for renewable energy, with a 2030 target of 50 percent of electricity generation capacity to come from non-fossil energy sources.
Based on decades of experience with integrating large shares of renewable energy in the Danish energy system and at the same time maintaining a world class security of electricity supply, the Danish Energy Agency share Danish experiences and learnings on a peer-to-peer basis with its Indian counterparts. The aim is to accelerate the green transition of one of the world’s fastest growing economies.
Cooperation between Danish and Indian authorities
Today, the India-Denmark Energy Partnership (INDEP) marks the centrepiece for the government-to-government cooperation on energy between India and Denmark. INDEP is a 5-year programme running from 2020-2024, with likely extension for a further programme period. The programme is implemented in collaboration with the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Indian Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, the Indian Ministry of Power as well as their relevant institutions in India.
