The Danish Energy Agency (DEA) and the South African electricity public utility ESKOM are currently engaged on knowledge sharing about large integration of renewable generation in the grid. The aim of the project is to gain insights on the constraints and distribution network operation of the South African Power system, as it begin to experience increased levels of variable, distributed generation and an increase in RE IPPs.
The main objective of this online workshop is to have knowledge sharing between Denmark and South Africa about dealing with mitigation possibilities for the selected practical network and power quality and operational issues faced by Eskom, such as:
- Voltage unbalance due to traction and its impact on RE generation including the long-term impact of operating RE generation under voltage unbalanced conditions. Mitigating solutions and specific operating guidelines for these network issues
- High voltages in a network due to un-normal switching status (N-1 situation) in combination with low load and weak grid and its impact on RE generation
- Overload of a substation transformer due to unusually high generation from a RE
Also, the workshop will discuss a practical application guide which can serve as a training manual to train network operators in the Control room. The guide will focus on operations such as changing reactive power control modes, operating RE generators during n-1 conditions (voltage and loading issues), curtailment of RE generators due to high frequency and impact of day-ahead power forecasts at DSO level.
The online workshop runs over the course of 2 weeks and is divided in two parts composed of 3 sessions each week. At the end of each part, a Live Q&A session is organized, in which associated specialists and experts will be available for answering questions and engaging in further discussions. The Live Q&A session will be hosted on MS Teams and the connecting link will be shared in advance with the participants.
