The Danish Minister for Climate, Energy and Building together with his Chinese colleague opened an energy efficiency seminar on 12 September in Beijing on excess heat from industries.

The excess heating seminar marks the starting point of the bilateral cooperation between the Danish Energy Agency (DEA) and the National Energy Conservation Center (NECC) on improving energy efficiency in the manufacturing sector, the building sector and the district heating sector.

The Vice-Chairman of the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), Mr. Xie Zhenhua, and the Director General of the National Energy Conservation Center, Mr. Li Yangzhe, held the opening speech along with the Danish Minister for Climate, Energy and Building, Mr. Rasmus Helveg Petersen.

The seminar focused partly on the regulatory framework for improving exploitation of excess heat in industries and how the excess heat can be used for district heating purposes. The other focus of the seminar was to what extent technological solutions from companies can harness the excess heat from industries, such as the concrete and steel industry, to reduce the immense amounts of pollution arising from the use of coal for heating.

Around 70 participants from Chinese authorities, Chinese companies and Danish companies participated in the seminar.  The Danish companies Danfoss, Grundfos and COWI presented their business models and technological solutions to the Chinese authorities and Chinese companies aspiring to establish partnerships. Logstor and Force Technologies also participated in the seminar.

The International Energy Agency and the World Bank also gave presentations on the possibilities of excess heat and praised the Chinese and Danish effort on establishing cooperation to the benefit of industries, companies and the global climate.

The next step in the DEA/NECC cooperation is to analyse current policies and potentials. In this connection seminars on ESCO/financing and on optimization of district heating will be held.
