Hibonite-1 exploration well discovers oil in the Danish North Sea
As operator of licence 5/06 Wintershall Noordzee B.V. has drilled the Hibonite-1 (5504/1-3) exploration well in the western part of the Danish North Sea. Oil was discovered in sandstones of Late Jurassic age.
Hibonite-1 was drilled as a deviated well and reached its total depth in claystone of Jurassic age at 4431 metres vertically below mean sea level. Cores were taken and a logging programme was carried out. During a production test oil and gas was produced.
For a further evaluation of the extent of the oil discovery two sidetrack were drilled, Hibonite-1A and Hibonite-1B. Both sidetracks confirmed the presence of oil bearing sandstone of Late Jurassic age.
The oil companies will now evaluate the results of Hibonite-1 and make plans for the additional work that is necessary to determine if the oil discovery can be produced commercially.
Hibonite-1 was spudded on 10 September 2012 with the jack-up rig Noble George Sauvageau at the position 56° 55’ 28.17" N; 04° 10' 25.66" E (UTM zone 31; 6 198 435 m N; 573 351 m E), where the water depth is 52 metres.

The well is now being plugged and abandoned. The jack-up rig Noble George Sauvageau will subsequently be moved to neighbouring licence 4/06 for drilling of the exploration well Spurv-1. Wintershall Noordzee is also operator for the Spurv-1 well.
