As operator for the companies in Licence 5/06 Wintershall Noordzee B.V. has drilled the Ravn-3 (5504/5-2) appraisal well in the westernmost part of the Danish part of North Sea. The well confirmed the presence of oil.
Ravn-3 was drilled as a slanted well and reached its total vertical depth at 4469 metres below mean sea level in layers of Triassic age. The well encountered Upper Jurassic sandstone layers containing hydrocarbons. Oil was produced during a production test.
Ravn-3 is located app. 1.5 km south of the Ravn-1 well which in 1986 discovered oil. After drilling the Ravn-2 appraisal well in 1987 the previous licensee decided that the discovery was unattractive to develop further. The companies in Licence 5/06 will now evaluate the results from Ravn-3 with the view to decide whether production of oil can be established.
The well Ravn-3 was spudded 15 September 2009 with the jack-up rig Noble George Sauvageau at the position 55° 51’ 46.671" N; 4° 14' 5.823" E (UTM zone 31; 6,191,653.970 N; 577,295.080 E), where the water depth is 48 metres. The well is now being plugged and suspended.
