New agreement doubles energy savings
The next three years will see extra efforts to save energy. In total, energy corresponding to one-year's consumption by around 400,000 households will be saved.
This is part of an agreement established today between Minister for Climate, Energy and Building, Martin Lidegaard and grid and distribution companies.
The new agreement means that grid and distribution companies within the electricity, natural gas, district heating and oil sectors will have to double their efforts to save energy. In practice, they will do this by helping their customers, both enterprises and private customers, to reduce energy consumption. Initiatives by the companies could include consultancy, specialist assistance, and financial assistance.
"I'm extremely pleased that we have been able to set up this agreement, and I would like to thank the energy companies for the constructive process and for taking on the task of realising the considerably higher savings targets," said Minister for Climate, Energy and Building, Martin Lidegaard.
Under the new agreement, savings obligations of grid and distribution companies were increased in relation to the previous agreement from 2009. Moreover it has now been agreed how these savings are to be realised in practice. According to the agreement, the companies must help realise energy savings totalling 10.7 PJ (petajoules) in 2013 and 2014, and 12.2 PJ in 2015.
"This agreement is a decisive step forward in meeting our targets for energy efficiency in Denmark. We have found a good model in Denmark, in which energy companies play a leading role in efforts to save energy. This agreement takes us yet another step forward, and I am convinced that the energy companies will continue to carry out the task successfully," said Martin Lidegaard.
The new agreement focuses in particular on making initiatives as cost-effective as possible. Therefore it includes smoother administration for calculation, verification and documentation of savings.
