Brazil is a global leader in the green energy transition, with a high share of renewables in its electricity system. However, Brazil faces several challenges due to the large role of hydropower in its electricity matrix and growing demand. Reoccurring droughts threatens hydropower reliability and increases dependency on fossil fuels during dry periods. As a consequence, Brazil has made the continued growth and integration of variable renewable energy a key priority in its policy framework. This development has increased the pressure on the transmission system, with a high degree of curtailment as a result.
Denmark’s more than 50 years of experience in restructuring the energy system and high ambitions for wind energy is key for the cooperation with Brazil. The Danish green energy transition demonstrates that it is possible to run a stable electricity grid with high security of supply, even with a very large penetration of variable renewable energy.
The cooperation with Brazil focuses on sharing knowledge on the expansion and integration of renewable energy without compromising energy security, affordability and environmental concerns.
Cooperation between Danish and Brazilian authorities
Denmark and Brazil have cooperated on the green energy transition since 2021. First in the form of Danish Energy Transition Initiative (DETI) program and then as Strategic Sector Cooperation (SSC) from 2023. In 2025 the cooperation was expanded to the Brazilian-Danish Energy Partnership Programme (BRADEPP) led by the Danish Energy Agency. The programme is implemented in collaboration with the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Brazilian Ministry of Mines and Energy as well as other relevant institutions in Brazil and Denmark.
As part of the programme, an energy advisor is posted at the Danish embassy in Brasília, to facilitate the cooperation between the Brazilian partners and the Danish Energy Agency.
