Areas of cooperation

  • Offshore wind energy development
  • Long-term energy planning
  • Flexibility and integration of renewable energy
  • Energy efficiency in industry and buildings

Brazil is a global leader in the green energy transition, with high penetration of renewables in its electricity system. However, Brazil faces several challenges in its energy system due to the core role of hydropower in its energy matrix and growing energy demand. Reoccurring droughts threatens hydropower reliability and increases dependency on fossil fuels during dry periods.  As a consequence, Brazil has made the continued growth and integration of renewable energy a key priority in its policy framework.

Denmark’s more than 50 years of experience in restructuring the energy system is key for the cooperation with Brazil. The Danish green energy transition demonstrates that it is possible to run a stable electricity grid with high security of supply, even with a very large penetration of variable renewable energy. The goal is to assist Brazil in achieving a successful expansion of renewable energy without compromising energy security, affordability and environmental concerns.
Denmark and Brazil have cooperated on the green energy transition since 2021. First in the form of Danish Energy Transition Initiative (DETI) program and then as Strategic Sector Collaboration (SSC) from 2023. In 2025, the cooperation was expanded to an energy partnership programme called the Brazilian-Danish Energy Partnership Programme (BRADEPP) led by the Danish Energy Agency. The programme is implemented in collaboration with the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Brazilian Ministry of Mines and Energy as well as relevant institutions in Brazil.

As part of the cooperation, an energy advisor is stationed at the Danish embassy in Brasília, to act as a link between the Brazilian partners and the Danish Energy Agency.
