The Danish Energy Agency cooperates with the US on a green energy transition

The Danish Energy Agency cooperates with the US on ensuring an efficient green transition by coupling Danish expertise with integration of renewable energy, sector coupling and energy efficiency. This collaboration builds on strong partnerships with both federal agencies and state-level partners within renewable energy and energy efficiency.

Areas of cooperation:

  • Integration of renewable energy
  • Sector coupling
  • Energy efficiency
  • Renewable energy

How Danish experience supports the US green transition

With rapidly increasing energy demand, growing concerns about security of supply, and new industrial needs, the deployment of renewable alternatives across the US states has long been on the rise. Danish experiences with integrating renewable energy sources for the past 50 years are relevant in this context - from providing regulatory frameworks that enable new technological solutions, to addressing load growth, sector coupling, market mechanisms, and wind power development. The focus of the Danish-American collaboration is knowledge sharing and best practices on the regulatory side of integration, energy efficiency, and wind power. Additionally, the collaboration addresses regulatory challenges and possibilities of new technologies such as green hydrogen.

In addition to integrating new energy sources, Danish experiences also emphasize efficiency and smarter use of existing resources – both for domestic houses and for industry.  In California, this approach is reflected in the close collaboration with the California Energy Commission, California Public Utilities Commission and California Air Resources Board. This collaboration focuses on decarbonization through energy efficiency in the industrial and building sectors. For the industrial sector, the dialogue pertains to innovative solutions for the manufacturing industry and how regulations and incentives can accelerate their adoption. For the building sector, main topics are energy requirements in building codes, energy labeling of existing buildings, and digitalization.

Cooperation between Danish and US authorities

Initiated in 2016, the Danish-American government-to-government collaboration began with a Memorandum of Understanding focused on working together on increasing the share of renewable energy. Since then, the collaboration has expanded with additional topics, for example energy efficiency.

Today, the Danish Energy Agency has seven official state-level partners, namely California Energy Commission, California Public Utilities Commission, California Air Resources Board, New York State Energy Research and Development Authority, New Jersey Board of Public Utilities, The Commonwealth of Virginia, and Department of Commerce of the state of North Carolina.
