The Danish Energy Agency cooperates with African countries in the international alliance APRA on accelerating renewable energy

As a part of the Danish involvement in the Accelerated Partnership for Renewables in Africa (APRA), the Danish Energy Agency is supporting African countries in realizing their significant potentials in accelerating renewable energy and green industrialization across the continent.

The international partnership APRA was founded in 2023, and initiated by Kenya, Ethiopia, Namibia, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, and Zimbabwe and Denmark, Germany and United Arab Emirates. APRA was launched at COP28 with heads of state and high-level ministerial representation from Kenya, Namibia, Germany and Denmark. The alliance has since expanded to include Djibouti, Ghana, Mozambique, and Uganda, bringing its total membership to 10 countries.

APRA countries aim to accelerate the deployment of renewable energy on the continent. Thus, the purpose of APRA is to tackle some of the most critical bottlenecks: Engage the private sector, mobilize finance, and provide technical assistance. This includes developing policy frameworks and regulation as well as promoting investments in renewable energy projects while strengthening capacity in institutions.

The objective of the Danish Energy Agency’s support is to assist African countries in meeting rising demands for energy in a sustainable manner, ensuring least-cost development of the energy sector and affordable energy, while reducing dependence on fossil fuels and contributing to climate change mitigation and green growth.

The Danish Energy Agency is contributing with technical assistance and capacity building based on Denmark’s decades of experience in developing and integrating renewable energy without compromising energy security, affordability, and environmental concerns.

Cooperation between Denmark and the APRA member countries

Since the establishment of the alliance in 2023, Denmark has focused on providing new technical support to Namibia, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, and Zimbabwe, as well as continue existing technical assistance provision in Kenya and Ethiopia. The Danish engagement in APRA is implemented in collaboration with the Danish Ministry of Climate, Energy and Utilities, Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, other development partners, investment facilities, and international organizations including IRENA, serving as the APRA Secretariat, as well as United Nations Office for Project Services APRA Implementation Office (UNOPS APRA IO) based in Nairobi, Kenya.
