Visiting Denmark last week, H. E. Liu HE had expressed interest in gaining more knowledge about the Danish society following a green growth and low carbon transition strategy.

Mr. Morten Bæk illustrated the Danish transition from 100% dependent on imported oil in the early 1970’s until to today with ambitious Danish goals on renewable energy, district heating, energy efficiency standards and CO2 emission reductions.  It was stressed that the total Danish energy demand has remained flat for more than 20 years, whereas GDP has increased by 40%. In the same period, the Danish CO2 emissions have been reduced by 20%. At present, renewables count for more than 40% in the Danish energy mix – going beyond 50% in 2020.

He also presented the long term perspective transforming the Danish energy system to a fossil free energy system in 2050.  The Danish Energy Agency has recently published a new analysis report with five different energy system scenarios in the 2050 perspective. The point made by Mr. Bæk was very clear: The transition to 21st century low carbon energy system is doable – and it is payable.
