The exploration well Luke-1X in the Danish North Sea discovered gas and condensate

13. January 2010

As operator for the companies in Licence 8/06 Mærsk Olie og Gas AS has drilled the Luke-1X (5504/6-6) exploration well in the westernmost part of the Danish part of North Sea. The well discovered gas/condensate in sandstone of Middle Jurassic age.

As operator for the companies in Licence 8/06 Mærsk Olie og Gas AS has drilled the Luke-1X (5504/6-6) exploration well in the westernmost part of the Danish part of North Sea. The well discovered gas/condensate in sandstone of Middle Jurassic age.

Luke-1X was drilled as a vertical well and reached its total depth at 4572 metres below mean sea level in layers of presumed Lower Jurassic age. The well encountered hydrocarbons in sandstones of the Middle Jurassic Bryne Formation. Cores were taken and measurements carried out. In order to further appraise the discovery a side-track – Luke-1XA – was drilled towards the north. Additional measurements were carried out in the side-track and samples of gas/condensate were taken. Condensate is light oil.

The companies in the licence will now evaluate the results of the well and subsequently prepare a plan for the additional work that is necessary to determine if the gas/condensate discovery can be produced commercially.

Luke-1X was drilled just east of the Elly gas/condensate field situated in the A.P. Møller – Mærsk A/S Sole Concession. The well was drilled based on a cooperation agreement between Licence 8/06 and the Sole Concession.

The well Luke-1X was spudded 7 August 2009 with the jack-up rig Mærsk Resolve at the position 55° 45’ 49.781” N; 4° 26’ 28.641” E (UTM zone 31; 6180871.2 N; 590438.4 E), where the water depth is 40 metres.

The following companies participate in Licence 8/06:
Company %  Shell Olie og Gasudvinding Danmark B.V. (Holland) 43.3   A.P. Møller - Mærsk A/S  36.7  Nordsøfonden (The Danish North Sea Fund)  20.0
The well is now being plugged and abandoned. The jack-up Mærsk Resolve will subsequently move to the Tyra Field in order to drill a production well.
