Observed energy consumption down by 1.4% in Q3 2010

Unchanged energy consumption for the first nine months of 2010, despite colder weather

Unchanged energy consumption for the first nine months of 2010, despite colder weather.

Observed energy consumption was 1.4% lower in Q3 2010 than in Q3 2009. Consumption of oil rose by 4.5%, while consumption of natural gas and coal fell by 9.5% and 11.5% respectively.

Net imports of electricity in Q3 were slightly higher than in the previous year. When adjusted for fuel consumption in connection with foreign trade in electricity, energy consumption fell by 1.3% in Q3 2010.

Observed energy consumption for the first nine months of 2010 was unchanged compared with the previous year. When adjusted for fuel in connection with net imports of electricity, energy consumption fell by 0.7%. This small change in energy consumption is despite significantly colder weather in 2010 than in 2009. On the other hand the increase in wind power production in 2010 has helped keep down fuel consumption.

Primary energy production was 14.9% lower in Q3 2010 than in Q3 2009. Production of crude oil fell by 14.3%, and production of natural gas fell by 22.4%. The lower production levels for oil are because production in general is falling, while for gas the drop is due to lower deliveries as well as maintenance work on the platforms in August 2010. In the monthly statistics, production and consumption of renewable energy are assumed to be unchanged in 2010 compared with 2009.

In January-September 2010, primary energy production was 5.9% lower than in the same period of 2009.
