Ukraine: First meeting held in the Steering Committee of the Ukrainian-Danish Energy Center (UDEC)

The Danish Energy Agency (DEA) attended the first steering committee meeting of the Ukrainian-Danish Energy Centre (UDEC) on the 17th September in Kiev. The main purpose of the meeting was to initiate the implementation phase for the cooperation on UDEC between Denmark and Ukraine.

As a part of the Ukrainian-Danish energy cooperation, the first Steering Committee Meeting of the Ukrainian-Danish Energy Center (UDEC) took place on the 17th September 2015 in the Ministry of Energy and Coal Industry of Ukraine.

The Minister of Energy and Coal Industry Mr. Demchyshyn  thanked Denmark for its support to Ukraine and appreciated the interest of Denmark in sharing Danish experiences on efficiently use of resources in the energy sector with Ukraine.

The meeting was chaired by the Mr. Didenko, Deputy Minister of Energy and Coal Industry of Ukraine. Other participants in the Steering Committee were: The Danish Ministry of Foreign affairs (Vice Chairman), the Danish Ambassador to Ukraine, State Energy Efficiency Agency, State Statistics Service of Ukraine, Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources, UkrEnergo, UDEC, Danish Ministry of Energy, Utilities and Climate and the Danish Energy Agency.

The main purpose of the meeting was to initiate the implementation phase for UDEC including the first steps ahead. Furthermore, the establishment of UDEC, its staff and the framework for its operation were confirmed at the meeting. The discussions and conclusions made at an inception workshop on energy balance held in DEA in August 2015 contributed to the identification of the specific activities for the work program of UDEC.

The Steering Committee meeting was successful and a milestone, since it marked the start of the actual implementation UDEC’s activities. The Steering Committee will meet on a regular basis to evaluate and ensure progress based on progress reports of the activities.

The energy cooperation between Ukraine and Denmark will contribute to improve Ukrainian data for energy supply and consumption. This will enable Ukraine to create long-term models and scenarios for energy planning and policy. The UDEC cooperation covers technical support to the Ukrainian government and its administration within the six main topics:

1. Methodology of long term forecast modelling for national energy balance.
2. Methodology for greenhouse gas registry and UNFCCC reporting.
3. Monitoring system in the sphere of energy efficiency at industrial sub-sector level.
4. Methodology and tools for analysis of integrating renewable energy in regional grids.
5. Methodology and software for energy scenario analysis.
6. Analysis of options for increased use of biomass and biogas in the heat sector.
