China is rapidly becoming the world’s largest market for district heating (DH) technologies. But China is also facing several challenges. Danish companies and authorities have committed themselves to assist the ongoing Chinese efforts to develop the DH sector in a sustainable and cost-effective manner.

On Tuesday February 25 the Danish Energy Agency (DEA) met with the Chinese National Energy Conservation Center (NECC) in Beijing to discuss the implementation and future work programme for a co-operation agreement that was signed in June 2013. A major focus for this agreement is energy efficiency policy.

Since early 2013, 12 Sino-Danish projects have focussed on research, innovation and development within sustainability and green energy technology.

Energy use in buildings: China’s ministry for Housing and Urban-Rural Development and the Danish Ministry for Climate, Energy, and Building/Danish Energy Agency have taken steps to initiate a joint Sino-Danish “Nordic Built” retrofit demonstration project in China. Issues and challenges in the Mexican power sector were discussed during a two day workshop on energy planning, scenario development and modelling hosted by Mexico’s secretariat of Energy (SENER) in mid-February.

In order to keep track with high economic growth rates, China’s energy sector has grown at a rapid pace and the energy consumption has increased fivefold in the last 30 years. But China has set ambitious and progressive energy goals to meet the challenges.

The now former Danish Minister for Climate, Energy and Building, Mr Martin Lidegaard visited China with a group of nine Danish parliamentarians during the second week of January.

China National Renewable Energy Centre (CNREC) co-operates with Danish experts in developing scenarios for the Chinese energy system with the purpose of analysing alternative pathways for China’s future energy sector development and contributing to the ongoing policy process on China’s green energy transition.
