Cooperation between IEA and IRENA on renewable energy in South Africa

The Danish Energy Agency is supporting the Department of Energy in South Africa on energy data where IEA and IRENA have come together in an international training activity.

As part of the Danish-South African Programme on Renewable Energy a 3-day workshop took place on the 27th to 29th of September, for strengthening knowledge, skills, and analytical abilities in the field of renewable energy data collection, processing, and management. The workshop was prepared in cooperation between the Department of Energy in South Africa, the Danish Energy Agency and experts from the International Energy Agency (IEA) and the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA).

The objective was to provide training in relation to the development of a South African Renewable Energy Data and Information Service (REDIS). The workshop provided high level of technical assistance and capacity building to statisticians, planners, modellers and researchers. 50 participants from the Department of Energy, Ministry of Mines, Statistics South Africa, Eskom and Universities as well as government partners from neighbouring countries Namibia and Lesotho was part of the training activities.
