China: The Danish Energy Agency participates in the launch seminar of the IEA Renewable Energy Medium Term Market Report at ChinaWindEnergy on 14 October

16. November 2015

IEA and CNREC jointly organized a launch seminar for the Medium Term Renewable Energy Market Report at a side-event during the ChinaWindPower conference in October. The report was launched by a presentation by Head of the Renewable Energy Department in IEA Dr. Paolo Frankl and subsequently commented by CNREC, Danish Energy Agency and National Renewable Energy Lab (NREL) of US

Dr Paolo Frankl from the IEA speaking at the seminar

Paolo Frankl presented a very optimistic view on the development of renewable energy markets worldwide over the coming 5 years with high growth rates for capacity deployment, increased production and continuous decreasing prices for onshore wind, now becoming the most attractive source in the energy supply in economic terms. He also stressed that the integration of renewables is a matter of policy; it is not a technical issue. The largest threat for development of renewable energy is the hesitance towards reforms of the power sector in some countries.

China is on the road to become a frontrunner in renewable energy provided the right supporting power market reforms are undertaken in the coming years this development can be further accelerated.

Dr. Frankl also presented an illustrative example about recent project costs for onshore wind and solar projects Dr. Frankl also presented an illustrative example about recent project costs for onshore wind and solar projects worldwide showing that levelized cost of wind energy in China are in the high end internationally. According to him the reason is the limited competitions in development of wind energy in China. A reform of governance, tendering and project development will make the costs come down rapidly.
