China: The visit to China of the Danish Prime Minister, the Danish Minister for Climate, Energy and Building and the Danish Minister of the Environment

8. October 2014

Danish expertise on renewable energy is in high demand in China. This was confirmed during the visit to China September 9-12 of the Danish Prime Minister, the Danish Minister for Climate, Energy and Building and the Danish Minister of the Environment.

8 October 2014

The purpose of the visit for the Danish Prime Minister, Mrs. Helle Thorning-Schmidt and the Danish Minister for Climate, Energy and Building, Mr. Rasmus Helveg Petersen, was to further strengthen the close Sino-Danish energy cooperation.
Mr. Rasmus Helveg Petersen met with Mr. Wu Xinxiong, Administrator for the National Energy Administration, to discuss the bilateral cooperation on a.o. wind energy and bio fuels. They both expressed their great appreciation that the British Children’s Investment Fund Foundation (CIFF) had decided to support the important work of the China National Renewable Energy Centre (CNREC) in a multiyear cooperation with the Danish Energy Agency (DEA) and the US National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL).

The establishment of CNREC that advises the National Energy Administration (NEA) about matters of renewable energy has been one of the corner stones in the Sino-Danish cooperation. CNREC was officially launched in 2012 with support from the Danish side. One main task of CNREC has been to develop the Renewable Energy 2050 Scenario Study in order to forecast how the development of renewable energy in China can be carried out. This important work will be further strengthened in the future cooperation between CNREC, NEA, CIFF, NREL and DEA

Further, Mr. Rasmus Helveg Petersen and Mr. Wu Xinxiong together with the Danish Prime Minister visited the Danish wind turbine manufacturer Vestas’ factory in Tianjin. At this occasion, Mr. Rasmus Helveg Petersen and Mr. Wu Xinxiong participated in a joint Round Table on “Transition of Energy Systems – a Cost Efficient Pathway to Sustainable Energy” together with both Chinese and Danish companies in the field of renewable energy.

Mr. Rasmus Helveg Petersen also had a bilateral meeting with Vice-Chairman of the National Reform and Development Commission, Mr. Xie Zhenhua, to discuss energy efficiency cooperation and the status of international climate negotiations. They both expressed their great appreciation for the very good cooperation between CNREC and DEA based on the Cooperation Agreement that was signed during the Danish State visit to China in April 2014.

Mr. Rasmus Helveg Petersen and Mr. Xie Zhenhua together gave the opening statements of the “Seminar on Utilization of Excess Heat from Industrial Processes for District Heating Purposes” that was organized jointly by CNREC and DEA. See also separate article in this newsletter on the seminar.

During his visit to China, Mr. Rasmus Helveg Petersen also visited the innovative and energy efficient Velux office building in Langfang together with representatives from a research center under the Chinese Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development (MoHURD). In his speech, the Danish minister underlined that the newly built Velux office building “is an excellent showcase of Danish knowhow on energy efficient solutions in new buildings”.
