Electricity consumption fell in 2011 by 2.6%

24. February 2012

In 2011, electricity production from wind turbines corresponded to 28.2% of domestic electricity consumption.

In 2011, Danish domestic electricity supply fell by 2.6% compared with 2010. The change was influenced by milder weather in 2011 than in the previous year. The fall was greatest east of the Great Belt (ie, Zealand), where domestic electricity supply fell by 3.3%, while in western Denmark it fell by 2.1%. Apart from grid losses, Danish domestic electricity supply corresponds to electricity consumption.

Electricity production from wind turbines increased by 25.2% in 2011 and production corresponded to 28.2% of domestic electricity supply compared with 21.9% in 2010. Electricity production from large-scale and small-scale CHP plants fell by 19.7% and 18.0% respectively. Electricity production from autoproducers fell by 8.0%. The large drop is related to the increase in wind power and the fact that in 2011 Denmark was a net importer of electricity.

The Danish Energy Agency publishes monthly information about electricity supply on its website, The source of these statistics is Energinet.dk, which provides information about electricity supply in eastern and western Denmark, The monthly electricity supply statistics contain the following information:

- Electricity production by place of production
- Imports and exports of electricity by country
- Domestic electricity supply (electricity consumption and net losses)

The associated spreadsheet contains information for the period January 2000 to December 2011, for western and eastern Denmark and for the country as a whole.
